How to tune a ukulele online

  1. Tap “Start tuner” and allow microphone access.
  2. Keep standard G C E A for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles, or choose low G, D tuning or baritone.
  3. Hold the uke as you play it and pluck the string nearest your chin first — that is the G.
  4. Tighten if the needle is left of centre, loosen if it is right.
  5. When the display turns red and stays, tune the C, E and A strings the same way.
  6. Strum a C chord (just one finger on the A string, 3rd fret) to check everything rings together.

Standard ukulele tuning: G C E A

Most ukuleles are tuned G4 (392 Hz), C4 (261.6 Hz), E4 (329.6 Hz), A4 (440 Hz). The G string is higher than the C next to it — this is called re-entrant tuning, and it gives the ukulele its bright, sparkling strum. Many players remember it with “My Dog Has Fleas”.

Because the G is high, chords on a ukulele sound close together and sweet. If you play fingerstyle melodies and want a deeper bass, try low G tuning.

Low G, D tuning and baritone

Pick any of them from the tuning menu — the string buttons and targets update instantly.

  • Low G (G3 C4 E4 A4): the same notes with the G an octave lower — fuller sound, more range. You need a thicker G string.
  • D tuning (A4 D4 F♯4 B4): everything a tone higher, a vintage sound common in older songbooks.
  • Baritone (D3 G3 B3 E4): the four highest guitar strings. Guitar chord shapes work directly on a baritone uke.

Why new ukulele strings won’t stay in tune

Nylon and fluorocarbon strings stretch a lot for their first few days, so a new ukulele can go flat every few minutes. That is normal. Tune up, gently pull each string away from the fretboard, retune, and repeat a few times. After two or three days of playing they settle down.

Ukulele tuning tips

Pluck with your thumb. A soft thumb pluck gives a clean note the tuner reads instantly.

Tune in a quiet room. Ukulele strings are quiet; background noise affects the reading more than with a guitar.

Turn the right way. If you are unsure which way a peg tightens, turn it a little while watching the needle — it will move right as the pitch goes up.

Tune often. Check before every practice; it takes thirty seconds once you are used to it.

Ukulele tuner questions

Does this tuner work for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles?

Yes. All three use G C E A. Baritone ukuleles have their own preset (D G B E).

What does “re-entrant” mean?

The G string is tuned higher than the C, so the strings do not go from low to high in order. It is the standard ukulele sound.

Can I tune without a microphone?

Yes. Tap each string button to hear its note and tune by ear until the wobble between the two notes disappears.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in mobile Safari and Chrome. Tap Start first, then allow the microphone.

Is my audio recorded?

No. It is analysed live in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Is it free?

Yes, with no account or download.
