F♯7 is a dominant 7th chord built on F♯. Its notes are F♯, A♯, C♯, E. The flat 7th adds tension that wants to resolve, which is why dominant 7th chords drive blues and lead back to the home chord. It’s also written G♭7.

How to play F♯7

  1. Lay your index finger flat across fret 2, from the 6th string to the 1st string (the barre).
  2. Ring (3) on the 5th string, fret 4 (C♯).
  3. Middle (2) on the 3rd string, fret 3 (B♭).
  4. Strum all six strings.
  5. Pick the strings one at a time: each note should ring clearly — if one buzzes, move that finger closer to the fret.

No barre yet? Put a capo on fret 2 and play the open E7 shape — it sounds as F♯7. Work out other positions with the capo calculator.
